Important late 16th-century polychrome and gilded wood sculp - Lot 82
Important late 16th-century polychrome and gilded wood sculpture of the Virgin Mary in half-body form. In its original polychrome. Some restorations. Spanish Low Countries. Circa 1585. Dim. 92x50x30 cm (small chips) This sculpture is complete. It was part of a mise au tombeau of which it is the only surviving witness. Its life-size format is typical of the great ensembles of the Counter-Reformation period. According to tradition, it was made in the Carmelite convent in Seville at the beginning of the 20th century, but the intervention of a Flemish sculptor and ornamentalist would be justified by the finesse of the polychromy, which is exceptionally well preserved. The palette and pigments used are more Northern European than Spanish. The very restrained dolorism of the face is of rare elegance, borrowing from Italian and Dutch Renaissance sculpture. It is carved from a single piece of softwood, probably from the Compostela region.
