FLEMISH SCHOOL of the late 16th century. "La tentation de Sa - Lot 149
FLEMISH SCHOOL of the late 16th century. "La tentation de Saint ANTOINE" oil on panel (restorations but good condition) Dim. 55x41 cm In a fine antique molded, carved and stuccoed wooden frame with gadroon decoration Dim. 74x58 cm. This panel painting takes up the iconography of the holy Abbot exiled in the ruins of an ancient monument (symbol of the fall of paganism) and tempted by a courtesan who holds up a mirror to him (symbol of the vanities, the fiction of appearances and the need for introspection). Surrounded by fantastic creatures, Anthony is tempted by the devil to renounce his eremitism. Restored by Professor William WHITNEY in 1984, the painting revealed a peacock spread over the Saint's head. This iconoclastic wink mocks the Saint, who appears in the vanity of his virtues. No one knows why this motif was subsequently hidden by the painter.
