Italy 17th century Hendrick de Somer or Enrico Fiammingo (16 - Lot 162
Italy 17th century Hendrick de Somer or Enrico Fiammingo (1602-1655) attributed to, Pair of large original oils on canvas, "Le Denier de César" and "La Guérison de l'Aveugle Né" original stretcher, original frame and original metal mounting. Dim. 99x144 cm. Dim. with frame 110x 154 cm. Originally Flemish, but mainly active in Naples, Il Fiammingo was a pivotal painter who borrowed as much from Flemish painting as from the Italian schools. Our two paintings are examples of this. Le Denier de César (Caesar's Denarius) is a reworking of PP Rubens' composition in a style close to Ribera. The Healing of the Blind Man Born is a counterpart to Caesar's Denarius. The influence of Codazzin de Finson and Caravaggio's postures make these two works of obvious interest in the approach to the milieu of pictorial creation in Naples around 1640. These two previously unpublished paintings come from an important Swedish collection.
