Early 17th century school, " Déploration à l'entrée du tombe - Lot 167
Early 17th century school, " Déploration à l'entrée du tombeau " oil on canvas Dim. 9x40 cm. In a molded and blackened wooden frame Dim. 62x52.5 cm. Bears a probably apocryphal inscription "Joseph de Ribera". Mary and John weep over the body of Jesus lying in front of the entrance to a tomb that a figure has just entered (Joseph of Arimathea). The quality of the lapis lazuli blue and pink pigment used is usually found in the work of the great workshops, due to their cost. Previously attributed to the French school of the early 17th century, this painting was inspired by Poussin's Pietà in the National Gallery, Dublin.
