Venice 17th/18th century, Giulio Carpioni, Atelier de. "Larg - Lot 169
Venice 17th/18th century, Giulio Carpioni, Atelier de. "Large version of Bacchus and Ariadne", oil on canvas (restorations, craquelures and minor missing pigmentations) Dim. 112x 135 cm. In a wood frame with gilded frieze. Dim. 119x142 cm This large version depicts Ariadne abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. Lying naked beside her traveling trunk, she laments to Bacchus, who descends from Olympus accompanied by a young satyr and a panther to console her. While it's clear that the painter has never seen a panther or a jaguar, the figure of the young satyr does attract attention. The silhouette of his face is the subject of a major repentance visible to the naked eye. This is Carpioni's reworking of a work mostly painted by the studio. We can see Carpioni's lively, virtuoso touch and his taste for the burlesque.
