Abraham Bloemaert and workshop, "The Resurrection of Lazarus - Lot 171
Abraham Bloemaert and workshop, "The Resurrection of Lazarus", oil on panel composed of three boards cut and assembled diagonally in the manner of the early 17th century Antwerp school (Restorations) Dim. 55x75 cm In a molded and blackened wooden frame Dim. 62x82 cm This work, known from replicas based on the engraving by Abraham Bloemaert, is not a damaged painting that would have lost a large part of its pictorial layer. Its restoration by Professor William WHITNEY has revealed that the painting is in fact unfinished. As such, it allows us to see all the stages in the workings of Bloemaert's workshop around 1600. It offers a unique example of a technique known but nowhere to be found: the transfer of drawing to gelatin. The background layers for the architecture, the landscape, the saintly woman in the upper right and the setting of the figure with extended arm and leg (taken from a study in the Louvre's Cabinet des dessins Bloemaert), highlight this technique whose transitory nature leaves no trace in a finished work. This work should therefore be seen as a formidable window on the work of a studio, the transfer of drawings, the setting of drapery with very fluid strokes, the construction of glazes on faces and bodies and the great freedom in the organization of the stages.
