Sweden theme - Lot 226
Sweden theme Axel Fahlcrantz (1851-1925), "Sunset in red tones over the city of Stockholm" Oil on panel signed lower left. Circa 1923. Sight size 17x30 cm. In a molded wooden frame Dim. 24x37.5 cm This small, exceptionally powerful work is sufficient to demonstrate the importance of Fahlcrantz's work in 20th-century Nordic painting. After training at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts under Holm and Perseus, Fahlcrantz established himself as one of Sweden's leading landscape painters. He joined the Fria Konstnara (free artists) movement and developed a style that was initially strongly influenced by the French Impressionists, before evolving towards a quasi-abstraction at the end of his life. This small painting is an expression of his research at the end of his life. Now rediscovered, Fahlcrantz shows that another Northern school existed alongside Zorn and Carl Larsson.
