David TENIERS II after, "Grande Kermesse villageoise" oil on - Lot 250
David TENIERS II after, "Grande Kermesse villageoise" oil on canvas Reprise with variations of the composition in the Royal Museums of Belgium Brussels. (Restorations) Late 18th/early 19th century Dim. at sight 80x120 cm. In a molded and blackened wood frame. Dim. 96x134 cm. The exhibition at the Musée de Cassel clarified the context in which these scenes, often referred to as "village feasts" or "Flemish fairs", were created. These paintings, which mock the peasant feast, enabled the new bourgeois elite to mark their difference with a social category they had just left, and whose lack of "manners" they mocked. Here, debauchery is evoked by the dancer's Phrygian cap. The dog running about is the image of deranged fidelity. Some of the guests have had too much to drink, and are indulging their natural urges. Sins such as Envy, Lust, Curiosity and Anger are reflected in the attitudes, though depicted with a certain tenderness. These images created by the TENIERS I, II and III seduced Europe, arriving in numbers at the Saint Jacques open market in Paris. Some 400 were sold each year, and the Teniers workshops were prolific. Numerous painters exploited this lucrative vein. Demand remained strong throughout the 18th century, and our painting corresponds to this craze. It offers a delightful, cheerful series of portraits and groups, each depicting a different aspect of human character.
