Henning Malmström (1890-1968), "Portrait of Helge TROZELLI K - Lot 487
Henning Malmström (1890-1968), "Portrait of Helge TROZELLI KULL" oil on canvas signed and dated 1914 lower right Dim. 111x78 cm. In a molded and blackened wood frame. Dim. 131x97 cm This exceptional portrait of one of the rectors of Uppsala University is a masterpiece in HENNIG MALMSTROM's output. Here, the codes of worldly portraits by WHISTLER or ZORN are perfectly mastered. A photograph of the commissioner reveals the realism of the work, which perfectly captures the psychology of a man admired for his beauty and feared for his determination. The background of the painting is a masterly variation of a flowery décor, revealing a very modern mastery of painting, largely influenced by KLIMT . This work, by a highly regarded artist, demonstrates the ability of Swedish painters to assimilate examples from other countries while producing their own distinctive work. Johan Henning Malmström, born August 12, 1890 in Malmö , died March 1, 1968 in Husie , [ 1 ] was a Swedish painter and sculptor. He was the son of music fan Johan Malmström and Mathilda Roslund. Already during his school years, his ability to draw and paint portraits was noticed, and his teacher and Anders Trulson encouraged him to study art. After completing his studies, he moved to Copenhagen, where he studied drawing with Gustav Vermehrens and at Johan Rohde's school of painting, before continuing his self-taught studies on trips to Germany, Italy and England, among other places. He made his debut in an exhibition with the Skåne Artists' Association in 1908, and was a regular participant in the Skåne Art Association's exhibitions after its foundation in 1914. With Ossian Gyllenberget Helge Kemner, he exhibited at the Lund University Art Museum in 1922. He took part in group exhibitions with the Swedish General Art Association and the Riksförbundet for the Visual Arts, and was represented at a touring exhibition in America. His public works include the Snäckan fountain in Malmö's Badhusparken. His art consists of flower still lifes and a number of portraits, where he initially worked in oil, but around 1924 switched to working almost exclusively in pastel. Malmström is represented with a portrait of Bo Bergman at Stockholm's Modern Museum, Malmö Museum, Helsingborg Museum, Landskrona Museum, Kulturen i Lundet with anautoportraitat Tomelilla Museum and in the state portrait collection at Gripsholm Castle. He is buried at Sankt Pauli Central Cemetery in Malmö.
