Edvard BECHTELER (1890-1983), "EUROPE NEW START" oil on panel signed lower right Dim. 105x104.5 cm. In a large carved, painted and partially gilded molded wood frame. Dim. 126x126 cm.
Allegory showing two sailors setting a ship afloat in 1944 to symbolize the rebirth of hope in Europe after the 1944 landings.
Bechteler initially worked as a turner and carpenter, before beginning studies with Heinrich von Zügel and Max Dörner at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He then continued his self-taught studies on study trips to several European countries, including Serbia, Albania, the Netherlands, Italy and France.
He settled in Sweden in 1933 and became a Swedish citizen in 1943. He and his wife exhibited at the Fahlcrantz Galleri in Stockholm in 1936, and participated in travelling exhibitions with the Ångermanland Art Association and group exhibitions with the Swedish General Art Association.
In this work, Bechteler engages in a dialogue between frame and image, painting both as a whole.
The influence of BLEUE REUTER is evident in this painting, which demonstrates the modernity of an evolving figuralism.
Detachment of the pictorial surface from the frame.
