Silhouetted portrait of "Monsieur Flaschsland" in an officer - Lot 309
Silhouetted portrait of "Monsieur Flaschsland" in an officer's tneue. Canivet de papier noir collé sur fond blanc, a technique uncommon in France, French artists were often obliged to work in Germany or England, where the golden age of decoupage flourished from 1770 to 1830. The model is a relative of Frédéric Charles Flachsland (b. 1769), a family of Alsatian lawyers from Strasbourg. This rare French example certainly owes much to its Alsatian origin. 7 x6.3 cm à vue in a gilded copper repoussé frame decorated with strings of pearls and gadroons 10x9cm early 19th c. circa 1820.
